AAR 3134 -HISTORY (study plan)

SANCHI STUPA





WHEN: Originally commissioned by the Emperor Ashoka the Great, 200 BCE
WHERE: located in Sanchi, a small village in Raisen district in Madhya Pradesh, India
WHY:
- outstanding of Buddhist art and architecture
-stupa - large hemispherical domes, conttaining central chamber placing the relics of Buddha
HOW: Lord Buddha has symbolicaly represents by footprints, wheels, thrones rather by its own image
IMPORTANT ELEMENTS:

1. CHATRA - a crown, parasol like structure symbolizing high rank, to honour and shelter the relics

2. TORANAS - monumental gateways covered with narrative sculptures, shows scenes of Buddha life



















ROCK CUT MONASTERIES / TEMPLE OF AJANTA


WHEN: 2nd-1st century BC, 460-480 AD
WHERE: located near main trade route, Maharashtra at the Hills of Sahyadri Mountains
WHY: creating the structure of the temple by carving it out of solid natural rock, the cave regarded as the place of sanctity
HOW:

-variety decorative sculpture


-intricately carved columns and carved relief


-exquisively carved cornice & pilaster
